Sharing the love of God practically

Honduras’ ten million people are a nation suffering great poverty. Violent gang culture with organized crime and drug cartels, has powerfully influenced society. Honduras also has 60 per cent of Central America’s AIDS cases.  High rates of disease and low educational achievement, mean there is much that can be done through showing God’s love in practical ways.

Although there are a large number of followers of Jesus in Honduras, the challenges of living authentically in the current climate offer opportunities for practical service amongst poorer communities.

A team visited a community where a high percentage of people were infected with HIV, and many children had lost a parent to AIDS. After receiving a small gift for the children and hearing that God loves them, one little boy spoke to a team member.

“My mother is dying [of AIDS]; I’m afraid I might too,” he said. “My dad is in jail, and my brothers have gone to live in New York. But they didn’t take me, because I’m the little one.”

The team member hugged him. “This is from Jesus who loves you so much,” she said.  They hugged and cried together.  The little boy had believed he didn’t matter to anyone but now knew it was not true – Jesus loves him.

Jesus followers in Honduras

Officially, there is religious freedom in the country.  Figures state that 96 per cent of the nation are Christian, historically mainly Roman Catholic, with thousands yet to hear the Good News of Jesus for the first time. Pastors receive minimal incomes to be able to give adequate pastoral care. Young followers of Jesus need discipling in a deep personal relationship with God to reach out to others who do not yet know Him as visible expressions of God’s love.

Come to the capital city, Tegucigalpa, teeming with one and a half million relational people. The majority language is Spanish, with English also used, so you will be able to converse with English speakers or use your Spanish!

We would love to welcome people who want to make an impact in people's lives locally and globally.  Any international worker can live alongside national Jesus followers: you do not need specialist skills, just a willingness to live and share your own personal journey of faith.

Whether you come for a long, or short time, or join us remotely; or whether you pray, or invest in lives through financial support, there are many ways for you to share God’s love with the people in Honduras.
