After 150 years of British rule, Hong Kong became the first Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China under the "One Country, Two Systems" policy of 1 July 1997. Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with a land mass of 1,114 km2 and a population of 7.5 million. About 91 per cent of the population is ethnic Chinese, and 9 per cent are from other groups.
Hong Kong is often described as "East meets West." As one of the world's leading international financial centres, Hong Kong has a major capitalist service economy characterised by low taxation and free trade.
Hong Kong people enjoy religious freedom. Approximately 43 per cent of the population practices some form of religion. Many major religious bodies have established schools and provided health and welfare facilities. Protestant and Catholic churches in Hong Kong continue to evangelise to the least reached through education and social services. The opportunities of ministries are changing and local Christians are getting themselves prepared to face the challenges ahead.
The work of OM in Hong Kong is two-fold: It is a home office that sends out recruits from Hong Kong churches to many OM fields, and we also have an outreach ministry in Macau.
In Hong Kong, we provide training courses that aim to mobilise local Christians and churches to take part in cross-cultural missions and short-term mission trips. We have also developed a board game, Borderlines, to reach out to young adults and designed simulation games for participants to experience the life of refugees and reflect on justice in the world.
Macau is a former Portuguese colony that became the second SAR of China on 20 December 1999. OM started to serve in Macau before the handover in 1999. Macau has overtaken Las Vegas, USA, as the world’s No. 1 gambling market and the city is strongly dominated by idol worship and gambling. Christianity makes up approximately 5.4 per cent to 7.0 per cent of Macau's population, with the majority being Catholic (around 4.9 per cent) and a smaller percentage being Protestant. At the moment, we only have one worker who serves the marginalised people in the region. Come join us in responding to the great needs in this harvest field!
If you are interested in being the salt and light among the marginalised people in Macau, or using our board games outreach tool in your ministry, please contact for more information.
