Requirements
Language: Language learning is required, and language proficiency will be evaluated after the
first year. For near culture missionaries (such as those from Asia), language learning takes at
least 1 year if studied full time, and for far culture missionaries, it could take up to 2
years. Therefore, we strongly advise those coming to attain a JLPT (Japanese Language
Proficiency Test) N5 level before arriving in Japan.
Driving Licence: A valid driving licence is required prior to arrival in Japan. The international driving permit is valid for one year only, after which it must be converted to a Japanese driving licence within the first year of stay.
Working In Teams: All new missionaries must be willing to work within a team; to serve,
learn, and grow together. As our teams are made up of people from different cultures and
theological backgrounds, an open attitude and willingness to accept one other within the
team are vital. You will also need to be flexible in your expectations, and willing to learn to
do things "outside the box" of what you think ministry is supposed to look like. As OM Japan,
we are looking at creative approaches to reach this least reached nation.
