"Wolf always says we walked in the wilderness for 40 years, until God guided us into a church," Monika shares. Wolf and his wife Monika grew up in Germany. Although they were baptised at birth, they say they did not have a personal relationship with Jesus for decades. "When Wolf was 56 and I was 60, we accepted Christ and were baptised again."
Wolf has spent 65 years as a professional pastry chef. One day, while reading an OM magazine, they saw that OM's Ship Ministry was looking for a baker. Wolf assumed his age would be a barrier, since he knew that many of the crewmembers were younger.
"We prayed and said, Lord, if you want us to serve on the ship, that will happen," Monika recalls.
They joined Logos Hope in South Africa as short-term bakers. Wolf's decades of skill proved invaluable on board almost immediately. When their term ended, they felt God calling them back.
God's unique timing
What had started as a trade, would in time, become a way to serve others. Wolf and Monika returned to Logos Hope in 2025, this time to train the ship's new baker, Eduardo (Brazil).
"The training with Wolf was the best. He saw something in me — I never thought I would be the one making bread for the crew," Eduardo says. "At the beginning I asked God, ‘Why me?’ Send another person.’ But He showed me so much about myself and told me to stay where He wanted me."
And Wolf taught Eduardo more than baking. "I remember him speaking about ministry and how we could use the bakery for it," Eduardo says.
Assistant baker Tiara (Curaçao), later trained under both Wolf and Eduardo.
"Wolf taught me a lot about the science of baking and the techniques. Eduardo also passed on what he learned from Wolf," Tiara says.
What began as one baker's 65 years of practice is now shaping two more bakers who will one day pass the experience on to others.
Wolf and Monika never imagined that as seniors, they would be led to serve on the ship in this way.
"He never calls the able," Wolf says. "He calls the available."
