Over a year ago, early in the morning of February 6th, 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, followed by large aftershocks, took place in the southeastern part of Turkey. Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus and Israel also felt its effects. Teams in Turkey wanted to encourage communities of Jesus followers to bring relief and help to those affected. Churches gave practical support in food packages, temporary shelter materials, hot meals and rebuilding livelihoods. Communities began to recognise their actions came from the practical outworking of their faith in a God who cares for His world, and asks His followers to care, too. Some have even decided to put their trust in this God whose people have given them loving service.
“It could take eight years for communities to be restored following these devastating earthquakes. We want to do our part in helping communities move towards restoration,” said a team member. “We would also love to see people discover a personal faith in the God who saves.”
Özcan* is someone who discovered God hears and cares for him. Although believing God was distant and unknowable, when Özcan heard a voice telling him to leave his city, he did so. A week later, a powerful earthquake shook his province, where many died. Although Özcan was physically safe, he was in great financial need. Desperately, he prayed: “God, if You’re real, and You hear me, please help me.”
The following day a believer called him. “Özcan, I have a financial gift for you, but it’s not from me. It’s from Jesus Christ.”
Özcan began attending a local fellowship and reading the Holy Book. He came to faith shortly afterwards, realising he had heard God’s voice, both saving his life from the earthquake and helping him with his finances. May God reveal Himself to many other Özcans as their Saviour!
