Rebuilding hope after the storm

Hurricane Melissa made a devastating landfall on Jamaica’s coast in late October 2025, with winds of more than 185mph (295 km/h). The nation faced the strongest storm in its modern history. The OM team on the island quickly offered help.

The powerful category 5 tropical cyclone, Hurricane Melissa, moved across Jamaica, with 30 inches (76cm) of rain in some parts of the country, resulting in significant flooding, destroyed homes and infrastructure and, sadly, many deaths.

The OM team in the Caribbean quickly mobilised a relief team. During the three-week first stage, the team identified the communities' urgent needs and, in partnership with other organisations and churches, helped over 1,600 people by distributing water filters and zinc roofing sheets.

The initial phase was followed up with a second relief mission to repair homes. The two-week mission consisted of a team from Jamaica, Tobago, St Vincent and the USA, led by the Jamaica team members.

Rebuilding hope

One of the homes repaired was that of Teresa and her six children. The walls of their home were badly damaged, and the roof was blown off. The family was forced to live in a wooden shack put together from materials recovered from their shattered home.

The OM relief team got to work quickly and repaired Teresa’s home, building a new roof that will withstand the next hurricane season. The team not only met the family’s physical needs, but they also took them to the local church and introduced them to Jesus.

Please pray for Teresa and her children to settle back into their home, and that they will believe in and love our Lord Jesus. Pray also for a second relief team going in April 2026.
